Legislative Analyst Calls for Statewide Traffic Strategy, PATH Input

The California Legislative Analyst's Office (LAO) detailed examination of the 2001-2002 Budget Bill recommends that Caltrans establish a steering committee, on which PATH will have a seat, to "determine how the department should take advantage of Advanced Traffic Management System data for congestion monitoring." Citing PATH's freeway Performance Measurement System project (PeMS) and its realization of new opportunities in providing traffic managers with reliable real-time highway information, the LAO calls for the new committee to develop a statewide strategy on how to take advantage of information that PeMS is now making available, such as current speeds, amount of delay, and travel time predictions. In addition to PATH, committee members will be drawn from Caltrans' Traffic Operations, Planning, and Highway Program, the Information Systems and Sevice Center, and the California Chamber of Commerce.
