California Partners for Advanced Transportation Technology (PATH) was established in 1986. It is part of the family of programs that comprises the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS), at UC Berkeley. ITS, established in 1947, represents a long term collaboration between the University of California and Caltrans to develop new knowledge, people and technologies that will continually improve systems to construct, maintain and improve California's surface transportation network.

PATH is unique among ITS programs - as it utilizes a multidisciplinary approach. PATH closely collaborates with Caltrans research and operational staff to define strategic challenges in transportation. PATH staff formulates an appropriate approach and creates interdisciplinary teams - that combines the expertise of researcher throughout UC with universities and transportation firms from across the nation.
