Summary

This project is designed to describe the knowledge and behavior of pedestrians and drivers at marked and unmarked crosswalks in California, with the intent of decreasing pedestrian injury and fatality through the implementation of countermeasures determined to be most effective based on the research findings. This goal will be accomplished by the achieving of the following eight objectives:

  1. conduct a review of previous research,
  2. conduct collision analyses of pedestrian injury data in California,
  3. assess public awareness, knowledge, and attitude concerning right-of-way at crosswalks,
  4. direct observations to assess actual behavior of drivers and pedestrians at crosswalks,
  5. develop appropriate countermeasures,
  6. develop a best practices protocol manual,
  7. develop and test a training module, and
  8. prepare and disseminate a final report of the findings.
