VII California Development and Deployment: Proof of Concept
James Misener
California PATH
Summary
VII California is a three-year project to develop, demonstrate and deploy Vehicle-Infrastructure Integration (VII) in a key corridor in Northern California. Public sector partners include Caltrans and MTC. In addition, two automobile manufacturers with Northern California research presence are current partners. The overall goals of the VII California program are to:
- better manage the safety and productivity of the surface transportation system;
- benefit from the synergy of public sector, auto industry, and other private sector innovations; and
- build upon California's already considerable existing infrastructure investments.
The entire project is comprised of a three-phase development cycle, the first two phases leading to an initial demonstration over a limited set of roadside units (RSU) and vehicles at the November 2005 ITS world Congress, and the third phase resulting in a more permanent installation, and culminating in a Field Operational Test (FOT).
