SummaryThis research project addresses several of the important problems that need to be solved in order to develop and deploy an effective CICAS. It includes detailed, quantitative field observation studies to define baseline intersection driving behavior and evaluation of the latest commercial off-the-shelf detector systems that could be used to measure the locations and speeds of all vehicles approaching an intersection. These activities will extend the work on these subjects that was started in the Intersection Decision support project, providing greater breadth and depth of information than previously available. The project also extends the prior IDS work from a single traffic controller and cabinet, to address how the CICAS systems can be interfaced to the broad range of traffic control devices that already exist in the field. Our initial concept for a dynamic sign to convey alert information to the drivers will be extended to address a broader range of intersection conflict situations, and our initial alert algorithms will be extended as well, based on the enhanced knowledge being developed in this project. We will evaluate the potential impacts of CICAS on traffic flow, as well as safety, at intersections, and will work closely with the stakeholder communities in local public agencies and the traffic control supply industry to facilitate later public field operational testing and deployment of the projects of this research.
