San Diego Integrated Corridor Management Demonstration (I-15 in San Diego County)

Alexander Skabardonis
Director, PATH

Summary

Corridor management in California is highly disaggregated. To reduce congestion during adverse weather, large traffic demands, roadway work zone activity, and traffic incidents, drivers are shifted between networks. However, the lack of information about current conditions and the lack of standardized technical means for sharing this information make shifting between networks difficult. Also, the lack of institutional collaboration and coordination and the lack of integrated operational strategies procedures only further diminish corridor performance.

This project is aimed at integrated corridor management (ICM), through the development of organizational guidance, operational capabilities, and intelligent transportation system (ITS) technologies. One or more demonstration projects in metropolitan corridors will demonstrate and test the integration of these elements into a functioning management system. Possible corridors include San Diego County's I-15 corridor with the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), specifically its Transportation Committee, as the local overseers of the project.
