Summary
The TOPL project 1) specifies actions for operational improvements outlined in the Strategic Growth Plan (SGP), 2) identifies the benefits of these actions, and 3) produces a detection plan for the implementation of these actions.
The accomplishments of the TOPL1 system were a software system (CTMSim) that created a macroscopic model of a single freeway, simulating under different scenarios different ramp metering strategies. The goal of the TOPL2 system is to model and simulate a highway network with HOV and mainline freeway lanes. Multiple vehicle models and several possible scenarios (e.g. lane closure) will be included.
TOPL2 promises to exceed the expectations of the proposed research, simulating the effect of operational decisions to disturbances. It may even serve as a training tool.
