Biography

Brian Peterson is a Systems Development Manager with over three decades of experience working in the engineering and software development industries. Brian graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from Iowa State University in 1986. His distinguished career has included work in aircraft gas turbine maintenance and research, flight management systems, systems engineering, and enterprise and large-scale real time systems and software development programs.

Joining PATH in 2013, Brian effectively managed the Connected Corridors system development team of eight software developers and became the instrumental technical lead of the project. This was a complex, multi-year software development project with competing demands and limited resources, where the PATH team developed a pre-production, first generation Decision Support System and Transportation Data Hub as part of an Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) system.

In 2018, Brian received the Berkeley Staff Assembly Excellence in Management Award, in large part to his flexible and open-minded leadership style. He built a diverse team with a range of talents, including members from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and cultures. Prior to joining PATH, Brian worked for the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Air Force’s Wright Research and Development Center, ARINC, several smaller companies, as an independent consultant, and for UC Berkeley.

Brian has proven experience in both traditional and agile methodologies, systems engineering, and data management and standardization. His work continues to modernize and shape today’s traffic management systems with California PATH-developed, leading-edge technologies. He is currently working on recommendations to improve the Traffic Management Data Dictionary (TMDD), an Automated Driving System program for the Contra Costa Transportation Authority, and a high-level transportation cybersecurity review project.
